How VCs Decide in 30 Minutes

What does it take to back a scientific founder before there's a product, revenue, or proof the science will work? Max Meyer built Nucleus to do exactly that, becoming the first institutional believer in pre-seed deep tech across food, bio, and industrials. In this episode, how he learned to evaluate breakthrough science without being a scientist himself, and why the best founders pair technical brilliance with the ability to tell a story.

Replacing the Metals That Power Everything

Assia spent two years in an Oxford lab trying to replace indium with copper. Nothing worked, until she found a 13th-century article in the college library about a Chinese alloy that Europe spent centuries mistaking for silver. Today Milvus Advanced is substituting the rare metals that everything from touchscreens to hydrogen catalysts depends on, backed by Lowercarbon Capital, MD1, and a cap table that has quietly shifted from climate to defence.

Technology without commercialization is just expensive science

Beau-Anne joined Forward One because she was tired of soft impact. Her firm has been investing in deep tech since 2018, before it was fashionable, with two funds in the top 5% of their vintage. In this episode: why hardware is having its moment back, what the Series A playbook looks like for capital-intensive companies, and why a fund model that bets on unicorns is a fund model that fails.

The cement that stores carbon

Cement is responsible for around 8% of global CO2 emissions, and most of that comes from chemistry that’s over 100 years old. Andreas Saari co-founded Paebbl to build a carbon-negative alternative, using captured CO2 and olivine rock to create a cement material in about an hour. In this episode: why decarbonising cement is so hard, why Paebbl was built to work without a voluntary carbon market, and why Europe is sleepwalking into a supplementary cementitious material supply gap.
